W. Eugene Smith

 













  William Eugene Smith was born on December 20th 1918 in Wichita,Kansas and died on October 19th 1978 in Tuscan, Arizona. When Smith became 14 he used photography to aid his aeronautical studies. After a year he became a photographer for two local news companies. In 1936 Smith attended Notre Dame university where a special photographic scholarship was created for Smith. After a year he along with Helene Sanders studied at the New York institute of Photography.
    Smith started working for News week in 1937 but was fired for refusing to use a medium format camera, then he joined the black star agency and became a freelancer. In 1942 he became a war correspondent for Life magazine, there he covered many of the important wars in the pacific, which include Tarawa,Saipan,Guam and Iwo Jima. A lot if not most of his photos are of war, and sympathy, this is because he wanted to capture everything including misery. Smith is one of the most important photographers in the world. smith died of a stroke in Wichita, Kansas on October 19th 1997.
